Briefcase

Business Unusual , 70s , 80s , Christopher Carroll 1 Comment »

There's few things I love more than business fashion. Women's business fashion really took off in the late 1970's as more and more women started breaking through that glass cieling confining them as secretaries and making their way into the executive world.

Nothing really epitomizes this movement more than one of my most favorite films ever, Nine to Five. Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin all star in this 1980 flick in which they smoke a big jay together, fantasize about getting even with their evil chauvanistic boss, and then actually kidnap him and then discreetly take over the managing of their office. The fashion in the movie is totally fabulous as well (how could it not be with those threee headlining?).

And obviously from there came the blazer and shoulder-pad explosion of the 80s. Women were standing up and taking positions of power (or at least more power) in a world previously reserved exclusively for men. So, along with their power suits women needed a classy bag to go with it, and more refined, feminine briefcases were made. These in turn influenced briefcase designs for men, and most of the ones from this era at this point are nearly impossible to tell who they were designed for in the first place.

With the launch of the new site, we've got three fabulous briefcases for you to choose from. The first two were featured in the Cadillac Saloon: 2037 Photoshoot, worn by the "Fancy Lady" characters. All gorgeous, unique and vintage.

New Office, New Website! 25% Off Coupon!

Whoo! Lots has been going on around here. I've been working 70 hours weeks for over two months to get everything set up. Apocalypse Vintage officially moved into it's new home on October 25th. We're renting out a large warehouse near Bayshore in San Francisco. It's great to have all the inventory down here and start getting everything setup.

We got the bones of a photo studio setup and did a couple shoots there already! You can view a lot of the items up on the website already that were taken in the new studio. Here's a cute snapshot of the outfit I wore to the first shoot, photo by Christopher Carroll.

I love this sweatshirt dress so dearly. I want like 10 of them but I was only blessed with the one so far. Usually I wear it around the house as PJs, but I love dressing it up. It's so classy somehow, I almost don't understand it myself. It's great for playing tennis in the winter, as well! And no winter is complete with fur and faux-fur hats, like this one. And I wore my brown boots because I was about to drop them off to get new soles, which means I won't have them for a couple weeks. But I can't wait until after! They'll be so new and exciting while also being old and familiar at the same time. It's only recently been starting to get cold here in SF, so I'm only now getting around to getting my boots resoled. I just got my tan ankle boots resoled finally. I wore them way back in the first blog post on here, and the soles split that day. It's been real exciting to get them back.

Anyways! New Website! Yay!

I've been working on this for so long and it's great to have it live and looking so good! It's a great display for the photo shoots I work on. You can see the huge one that we finished a couple months ago now, finally online in its entirety. It's called Cadillac Saloon: 2037. Click on that to view the photos. And, now that the website is all up I'll be posting on my blog more, I swear. For real this time! Since the website went up so late I have to keep things a little scaled down for a bit, so it will leave me more time for doing things like blog posts, and other promotional stuff too. I'll be working on a lot more conceptual photo shoots and trying to get my work in some print magazines. There's some in the works already, potentially Curve and Novo. All exciting stuff, and I'll be sure to keep you updated.

Of course the main goal of the website is to sell some clothing! So, I have to make sure I plug that too, right? I've been saving my best finds all year for the launch of the new website, so you won't be disappointed. This is truly the best of the best. The most glamorous and chic. I know that right now everyone's budget is tight, and you will probably see some things on here that are just a little bit out of reach, so I want to help make it a little easier. Just enter in the coupon code in1209 and you'll get a 25% discount off of your entire purchase! You can even apply the discount to the purchase of a gift card. That means a $100 gift card for only $75, and a $50 gift card for only $37.50. The coupon expires on January 15th, so make sure to use it soon!

And don't forget to check back frequently. We'll be listing a lot more items over the next week, including lots of hats and bags. For easy updates, you can sign up for our newsletter in the top bar of the site.

More Work on the Set

Apocalypse Vintage , Set Design 1 Comment »

We went out to the Albany Landfill again yesterday and got some great work done on the set! In addition to some cleaning work we finished building the bar, the first major constructed piece of the set.

The interior is old styrofoam blocks which I think are from old docks. The wood was all found and sawed by hand. Next we'll be building a concrete bench and putting in the metal corner posts!

Conceptual Shoot/Photographer

Photo Shoot , Rachel Schwarz 3 Comments »

So I had some personal issues and had to move back the big conceptual shoot, but it's coming along! The date is now set in stone for Monday, September 21st. We've got a lot of work to do on the set still, but it's all cleared out now and ready for us to start building. I found a photographer who's really fantastic who will be doing the work on the shoot: Rachel Schwarz. I think her work really vibes with what I'm trying to create with this shoot and her portfolio is great so it will help pull in some other really fabulous people. Here is some of her past work:

I Wear Boots All Summer Long

70s , Forever Fall , jewel-tones , Outfit , shorty shorts , Slouchy Cardigans 2 Comments »

I'm pretty sure that Stevie Nicks was still living in San Francisco when she wrote those lyrics to Nightbird in 1983. The weather here definitely makes me want to wear boots in the summer a lot more than anywhere else I've ever been. The most fun thing thing for me about Forever Fall is bringing whatever the current season in and making an outfit that merges that season with fall. For summer that usually means some short shorts with a cardigan or knee-high boots, like in this first outfit. So, my fave 70s Lee high-waisted poly shorts and my 70s 9West Brazilian leather boots, to start. I don't have many opportunities to wear this forest green suede belt cuz it's so intense and hard to tie in. So, I got really excited that it worked so perfectly with this outfit. The top is this really fabulous billowing silk animal-print fabric and is really gorgeous on its own. It's short sleeve and pretty thin, so it's great for wearing on hot summer days on its own, and mild summer nights underneath this thin white bolero blazer. The brown piping on the jacket is so cute! The cream-colored tights and tan socks are for a little extra warmth but i also like how they tie in the top of the outfit towards the bottom, so the boots don't stick out too much. So this next outfit it was a little colder, but I wore the same jewel-tone scarf and the same boots. Again, a short sleeve shirt for when it gets too warm for the cardigan. I worse this belt before, in my last Forever Fall post, down at the sutro baths. This bright mustard cardigan is perhaps my favorite (have I said that before?). It's just such an amazing unique color! It's a bright without being a bright, a jewel-tone without being a jewel-tone and an earth-tone without being an earth-tone. I love it! Also, these high-waisted polyester pants are a great example of the weirdly unique stuff you can find in thrift stores. They're ribbed, stretchy and super comfortable, and they're not actually vintage. The button on the front says "World Cup Korea". Strange!
